Coffee pods are a great way to get quick, reasonably good tasting espresso with minimal effort, but its not an ideal system for anyone who likes a longer coffee drink. The idea behind Nespressos new line of portioned coffee pods and machines, called Vertuo, is to extend the barcode and brewing technologies of the standard pod machine just a bit to allow a much larger diversity of drink sizes and styles, but with the same one button operation. The Vertuo range covers tiny espressos to great big travel mugs. Given the ridiculous but descriptive portmanteau Centrifusion, the technology involves rapidly spinning the metal, grounds filled pods while pouring to allow variable extraction lengths so you can get coffee in the style you want without ending up with a thimbleful of weak joe or a whole mug of straight espresso. The pods come in 2. Espresso to the thermos ready 4. Alto, but they are not interchangeable with existing Nespresso pods. The machine I tried out for a few weeks  the Vertuo. Plus  is a handsome but bulky device with an adjustable cup holder and a tall water tank you can position on either side as your counter space allows. The first coffee I tried is called Stormio  an intense blend intended for a 2. Italian word that still conveys an exciting meaning in English. Lift the lid and the machine opens with an electric whir, place the pod in, press the lid down to close which also punctures the pod and press the big green button on top to start things spinning and flowing. By scanning a barcode on the pod youve inserted, the machine decides certain extraction parameters, including the cup size the blend is designed for, the temperature the water should be, the rotational speed, the flow rate and the time the water should be in contact with the coffee. Fans of white coffee will be pleased to know the Vertuo system works very well with milk the cow kind, at least. The same Centrifusion powered aeration that creates all that crema helps blend and lighten the milk without the need for a frother or even a spoon. Just make sure you dont have so much milk in the cup that you end up with Fortado on your floorboardos. Soy milk fans might need to encourage bonding with a little stir. If youre the kind of person that takes a keep cup to your local cafe to cut down on waste, you might be wondering if the pods are recyclable. They are, and each one is automatically dropped into a bin at the rear of the Vertuo. Plus after its used which makes for easy collection, but you cant just put them in your yellow bin. Instead you need to save them up and drive them to a collection point, or pay to send them back to Nespresso in a special bag via Australia Post. Vertuo machines are available now and are priced at 2.
